You’ve trained.
Race day is almost here.
Now it’s time to plan how you’ll enjoy Mackay beyond the course.
The Mackay Marina Run delivers one of the most scenic coastal runs in the country. It also takes you alongside the working harbour where Mackay’s coastline, community spaces and port life meet across some of the region’s best waterfront views.
If you’ve got time to spare across race weekend, these community spaces, cared for and managed by North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP), are worth adding to your plans.
North Wall Recreation Area
North Wall beach is a favourite stretch of Mackay coastline. Locals come here to surf, stroll along the shoreline and watch the day unfold.
NQBP cares for the North Wall precinct located next to the northern breakwater of the Port of Mackay, balancing public access with protection of the coastline and its natural values. Recent upgrades have kept the area easy to access while preserving its calm, open feel.
It’s a peaceful spot to stretch those sore muscles out after the run, take in ocean views or sit quietly by the water once race day wraps up.
Old Mulherin Park
Old Mulherin Park sits right at the harbour and is full of local character.
Located on port land, NQBP keeps this harbour-side park thriving for everyone to enjoy. Shady paths wind through open lawns and inviting picnic tables encourage you to slow down, refuel and trade race stories with fellow runners and locals alike.
Ask anyone in Mackay about the giant crocodile or Fred Flintstone and they’ll point you straight here. It’s a relaxed foreshore stop for families, visitors and runners during race weekend.
Look a little closer and you’ll also find small nods to Mackay’s harbour history, from remnants of older waterfront structures to the memorial for the park’s namesake, J.M. (John) Mulherin, a former Mackay Mayor and Mackay Harbour Board chairman.
Southern Breakwater
The Southern Breakwater is one of the most talked about sections of the Mackay Marina Run, and for good reason.
Part of NQBP’s harbour precinct, the breakwater is open year-round for community access. It takes you right out over the water, delivering sweeping ocean views and salty sea breezes. It’s also a front row seat to the Port of Mackay’s operations. If you’re lucky, you might spot a ship arriving or departing as goods (including sugar, fuel, break bulk and more) move in and out of the region.
Whether you’re heading back for photos or easing into recovery after the run, it delivers a classic Mackay coastal moment.
Make the most of your Mackay Visit
Whether you’re chasing a PB or turning race weekend into a short break, Mackay has more to offer beyond the event.
As a proud sponsor of the Mackay Marina Run, North Queensland Bulk Ports looks after these community spaces so locals and visitors can enjoy the harbour and coastline before and after race day.
